This is the wet season in the Philippines. About 20 tropical cyclones visit the Philippines annually. This causes loss of life, injuries and damages to property and also affects the economy. Although the government has made strides in Disaster Risk Reduction and Management  (DRRM) and has a system wherein contingency plans have been cascaded down to the Local Government Unit (LGU) level, it is still incumbent for each family to have their own system with regards to safety.

In the event that flooding is imminent, then the sensible thing to do is evacuate to the designated evacuation centers. This must be done in an organized and orderly manner for the family. It is not advisable that the evacuees depend solely from the government with regards to their basic needs. That is why it is incumbent for the family to have their own provisions when evacuating.

Each family must have their Go Bags. These contain items that will enable the family to be self-sufficient for 3 – 5 days in their basic necessities. Depending on the size of the family and age composition of its members, the Go Bags must contain the following:

1. Water
2. Medicines (maintenance medicines, antiseptics, bandages, anti-diarrheal medicines, anti-fever, and antibiotics)
3. Food (biscuits and crackers), canned food. It must be noted that food that need cooking not be brought.
4. Radios, flashlights, cell phones, batteries, knives, cutting tools, candles, matches, and lighters
5. Clothes (2 pairs of pants, 3 shirts, jackets, sweater, towels, underwear) good for 3 days
6. Important Documents
7. Identification Cards, Credit Cards and Cash

Each member must be designated a Go Bag that contains the above-mentioned items.
