Disaster Awareness an Preparedness

The Philippines is one disaster-prone countries in the world. Owing to its geographical position, it is visited by an average of 20 tropical cyclones annually, and being in the Pacific Ring of Fire, it is subject to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Extreme weather patterns due to climate change also exacerbate its condition.

That is the reason why the Philippines is fully committed in the continuance of raising awareness on disaster displacement. This was stated during the first meeting of the Platform on Disaster Displacement (PDD), a state-led platform that works toward better protection for people made homeless by calamity. Also, in that meeting the handover of the chairmanship of the PDD from Germany to Bangladesh was held.

The meeting also saw the handover of the chairmanship of the PDD from Germany to Bangladesh.

Through the country’s experience, the Philippines was also able to promote PDD by providing its expertise in speaking engagements and organizing side events that complement the core program.

PDD is aiming  to follow up on its predecessor – the Nansen Initiative (led by Switzerland and Norway) – and to implement the recommendations of the Protection Agenda, a toolbox to better prepare for displacement and to respond to situations wherein people are forced to find refuge within their own country or across a border.
