Mt. Mayon eruption 2018

It has been almost 2 weeks since Mt. Mayon has started its activity. Beyond the usual 7 -8 kilometers Hazard Radius, the effects will still be felt.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) has given advisories that the current eruptions could last for at least 3 months given the pattern has been established with regards to the eruptions.

But the effects will be seen as more of a continuing public safety and health crisis since there are effects that go beyond what has been shown daily in media.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) which is a component of the National Disaster Risk and Reduction Management Council (NDRRMC)  has issued a Public Advisory on the potential effects of the Mt. Mayon eruption and its activities.

Currently, the Danger Zone has been expanded from the initial 6 kilometers Danger Zone to 8 kilometers.

“The DENR, in close coordination with the Department of Health, will continue to monitor the air and water quality on affected areas and river systems to minimize environmental and health impacts of the volcanic eruption,” DENR Secretary Cimatu announced.

Evacuation plans are being coordinated with the NDRRMC, local government units (LGUs) and the Office of Civil Defense (OCD)  with regards to these plans.

“We need to observe harmonized protocols among concerned agencies to ensure zero casualty,” said Cimatu.

The danger of environmental effects caused by the eruption affects even the health conditions of the citizens in the areas.

“We all know that acid rain can cause deforestation, acidify waterways to the detriment of aquatic life, and corrode building materials and paints,” Cimatu pointed out.

In terms of health, Sec. Cimatu stated that sulfur dioxide could affect the respiratory system, particularly lung function, and can irritate the eyes.

As of the moment, relevant government agencies are monitoring the situation.
